The Best Time to Visit Spain for a Golf Holiday

The Best Time to Visit Spain for a Golf Holiday

Choosing the best time to visit Spain for a golf holiday is not as straightforward as it sounds. Spain is not a single climate. The Costa del Sol in January plays in 18 degrees of sunshine. Barcelona in the same month can be cold and wet. The Canary Islands in August are perfectly playable at dawn; mainland Andalusia in August is brutal by mid-morning. Getting the timing right means knowing which region you are going to, not just which country.

This guide breaks down the golf season across every major region in Spain, gives you a month-by-month reference table, and explains what else to factor in beyond the weather. For the full range of packages, visit our Spain golf holidays page.

Spain is Not One Climate -- Why Region Matters

Most seasonal guides for Spain golf treat the country as a single destination. It is not. Spain covers an enormous geographic range -- from the Atlantic-facing coast of Huelva to the semi-desert of Almeria, from the Pyrenean foothills near Girona to the subtropical Canary Islands -- and the weather across these regions can differ by 15 degrees and several hundred millimetres of rainfall in the same month.

The practical consequence for golfers is this: the answer to "when should I go" depends almost entirely on where in Spain you are planning to play. The sections below cover each major golf region with its own seasonal breakdown, followed by a month-by-month reference table for quick comparison.

Spain Golf Regions: Seasonal Breakdown

Costa del Sol

The Costa del Sol is the most popular golf destination in Spain and has the most forgiving year-round climate of any mainland region. Average temperatures sit between 16 and 19 degrees from October through to April, rising to 28 to 35 degrees in the summer months. Covering Marbella, Mijas, Sotogrande, Malaga, Fuengirola and Benalmadena, it is the region with the widest hotel range and the most course variety on the entire coastline.

Best months: October, November, February, March and April. March and April in particular are excellent -- the courses are green after the winter rains and the region is not yet at summer capacity.

Avoid: July and August for extended play. Midday temperatures regularly exceed 35 degrees. Early morning tee times are possible but the afternoon is genuinely uncomfortable.

Winter note: December and January are perfectly viable and popular with UK golfers. Occasional rain spells occur but rarely last more than a day or two.

Costa de la Luz

The Atlantic-facing Costa de la Luz runs from Tarifa in the south to the Portuguese border in the north, covering Cadiz, Huelva and Sevilla. It shares a similar temperature range to the Costa del Sol but receives more wind, particularly around Tarifa and the Cadiz coastline. Inland Sevilla is hotter and drier, and is one of the hottest cities in Europe in summer.

Best months: March, April, May and October. Spring is outstanding on this coast -- warm, settled and the courses around El Rompido, Islantilla and Montecastillo are in strong condition.

Avoid: July and August in Sevilla specifically. Coastal areas are more manageable but wind can affect play on exposed layouts.

Costa Almeria

Costa Almeria is the driest region in continental Europe and arguably the most reliable in winter. Rainfall is genuinely low year-round, which means courses stay playable even in the depths of January. Desert Springs Resort near Mojacar is a year-round operation for this reason and one of the most underrated golf destinations on the mainland.

Best months: November through to April. Temperatures are mild, sunshine hours are high and there is very little competition for tee times. A genuinely underrated winter golf destination.

Avoid: July and August. The heat is dry rather than humid but still extreme, routinely reaching 38 to 40 degrees in the interior.

Costa Blanca

The Costa Blanca stretches from Valencia in the north to the border with Murcia in the south, covering Alicante and Benidorm. It enjoys a drier, more stable climate than the northern costas and has a strong golf infrastructure, particularly around Alicante and the La Finca and Las Colinas areas.

Best months: October through to May. Autumn and spring are ideal -- warm enough to play comfortably all day, cool enough in the evenings to be pleasant. Valencia in April and May is particularly good for golf combined with a city visit.

Avoid: August in the interior. Coastal areas are manageable but busy with summer tourists.

Costa Calida

Murcia and the Costa Calida sit between the Costa Blanca and Andalusia and have one of the warmest and driest climates on the mainland. La Manga Club -- one of the most established golf complexes in Spain with three courses -- operates comfortably from September through to June.

Best months: October, November, March and April. La Manga in spring is a particularly strong choice -- the courses are in excellent shape, the resort is not at capacity and the surrounding coastline is at its most attractive.

Avoid: July and August. Temperatures can be extreme and the resort atmosphere changes significantly in high summer.

Costa Brava and Barcelona

The Costa Brava and the area around Girona and Barcelona represent the northern edge of the Spanish golf season. The climate here is Mediterranean but noticeably cooler and wetter in winter than the south. Hotel Camiral at PGA Catalunya near Girona is one of the best golf hotels in Spain and particularly popular with UK golfers for a spring or autumn short break.

Best months: April, May, June, September and October. This region earns its reputation in spring and autumn -- warm, green and considerably less crowded than the summer peak.

Avoid: December through to February unless you are comfortable playing in cooler, wetter conditions.

Costa Dorada

The Costa Dorada south of Barcelona sits between the weather patterns of the north and south. Winters are milder than the Costa Brava but wetter than the Costa del Sol. The courses around Salou and Cambrils -- including Infinitum Golf -- are well maintained and popular with groups looking for a Spain golf break combined with a resort atmosphere.

Best months: May, June, September and October. This region does not have the winter reliability of the south, so spring and autumn are when it genuinely excels.

Avoid: July and August for course quality and comfort -- the area is at peak summer resort capacity and courses can feel pressured.

Mallorca and the Balearic Islands

Mallorca has a year-round golf season with a climate broadly similar to the southern Costa Blanca -- mild winters, hot summers and a long, reliable spring and autumn. The island is at its best for golf in April, May, September and October. For a full breakdown of courses, hotels and areas, see our complete guide to golf in Mallorca.

Best months: April, May, September and October.

Avoid: July and August for a focused golf trip -- possible with early tee times but not ideal for pace of play or comfort.

The Canary Islands

The Canary Islands are the standout winter golf destination in Spain and one of the best in Europe. Located off the coast of West Africa, the islands sit outside the Mediterranean weather system entirely and enjoy a subtropical climate with remarkably stable temperatures year-round -- typically 18 to 24 degrees in winter and 24 to 28 degrees in summer. Rain is rare, particularly in the south of each island.

Best months: November through to April without question. The Canaries are specifically excellent when mainland courses are at their worst -- January and February in particular offer reliably warm, dry, playable golf when much of Europe is unplayable.

Summer note: July and August are warm rather than extreme and the islands are fully playable, but peak summer brings the highest prices and most crowded conditions. October and November offer near-identical playing conditions to February at significantly lower cost.

Best Overall Months for a Spain Golf Holiday

If you can only travel at certain times and want the safest bet across the widest range of regions, these are the months that consistently deliver.

April is the single best month for golf in Spain. It works across every region simultaneously -- the south is warm and green, the north is alive after winter, Mallorca is at its best and the Canaries remain excellent. Course conditions are typically at their peak after the winter rains. Prices are reasonable and crowds are well below summer levels.

October runs April very close. Courses are recovering well from summer, temperatures have dropped to comfortable levels everywhere and prices are often lower than spring. One of the most underrated months for a Spain golf break.

March is strong for the south and increasingly viable across the whole country. The Costa del Sol, Costa de la Luz, Costa Almeria and the Canary Islands are all excellent in March.

May is excellent across the board and slightly warmer than April, making it a good option for those who prefer longer days and warmer evenings before the summer heat arrives.

What Else to Factor In

UK School Holidays

The Costa del Sol and the Canary Islands in particular see significant price increases during UK half-terms and the Easter break. If you have flexibility, travelling in the weeks immediately before or after a school holiday period can save meaningfully on both flights and accommodation.

Course Conditions After Summer

Many golfers underestimate how much the summer heat affects course conditions. Mainland courses in the south tend to be at their least attractive in September, having been stressed through July and August. By October they are recovering well; by March and April they are typically at their annual best. If course condition matters to your group, spring is a safer choice than early autumn for the south of Spain.

Flight Availability

Direct flights from UK airports to Malaga, Alicante, Barcelona, Palma and the Canary Islands operate year-round, though frequency reduces in winter on some routes. Lanzarote and Gran Canaria have good winter connectivity precisely because demand from UK golfers is consistent. Girona and Reus (for Costa Brava and Costa Dorada) have more seasonal schedules and some routes suspend in winter -- worth checking before committing to those regions in January or February.

Group Size and Tee Time Availability

Larger societies should book earlier in the peak months of April and October. Popular courses on the Costa del Sol in March and April can fill quickly, particularly at weekends. Our team handles tee time bookings as part of the package, which takes this pressure off the organiser entirely.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best month to play golf in Spain?

April is consistently the best single month for golf across Spain. Temperatures are comfortable in every region, courses are in their best condition of the year after the winter rains, and prices are lower than the peak summer period. October is a very close second, offering similar conditions with the added benefit of lower costs than spring.

Can you play golf in Spain in January?

Yes, in the right regions. The Costa del Sol, Costa Almeria and the Canary Islands are all excellent in January. Average temperatures on the Costa del Sol sit around 16 to 18 degrees, which is comfortable for a full day's play. The Costa Brava and Costa Dorada are less reliable in January and better visited in spring or autumn.

Is Spain too hot for golf in summer?

On the mainland, July and August are genuinely difficult for golf unless you are prepared to play very early in the morning. Midday temperatures regularly exceed 35 degrees in the south. The Canary Islands and the northern regions around Barcelona and the Costa Brava are more manageable. The Canaries in particular offer the most consistent year-round conditions of any region in Spain.

Which part of Spain is best for a winter golf holiday?

The Canary Islands are the best choice for a winter golf break in Spain, offering subtropical temperatures of 18 to 22 degrees from November through to March with very little rain. The Costa del Sol and Costa Almeria are the best mainland options in winter, particularly from November through to February.
